subject: Making Your Own Bamboo Bar Stools [print this page]

Tiki-themed parties are all the rage these days, which is why many people have built their very own Tiki bars or bought portable bars to set up in their backyard. If you are planning to set up a Tiki bar somewhere in your home as well, whether as a venue for entertaining friends or simply to have a personal relaxing area, it is advisable to complement your Tiki bar with a few bamboo bar stools for an all-natural, authentic tropical island appeal.

The unique characteristics of bamboo furniture make it a great addition to both indoor and outdoor socializing areas. What's more, it has an inherent style and durability that helps ensure that your furniture will last a long time and will always be in fashion. There are several different styles, sizes, and shapes of bamboo stools. There are those with a backrest and those without, and there are hexagonal, square, and round stools as well. To make sure that the bar stools match your Tiki bar perfectly, you may even build them on your own.

Remember to sand all parts carefully before assembling the stools. Lay down two 46-inch poles beside each other and then measure and mark 30 inches from their widest end. These ends will be the bottom of the stool's legs. Take a 17-inch board and screw each end to the two poles, just below the marks that you made. Be sure to use two screws on each side. Repeat the process using two 30-inch poles. These poles will serve as the front legs of the stool. Take a 15-inch board, screw one end to one of the 30-inch poles and the other end to one of the 46-inch poles right at the 30-inch mark. Complete the frame by screwing another 15-inch board to the other poles.

Screw seven 2x17-inch slats across the seat of the stool into the tops of the 15-inch boards. Bamboo bar stools are more comfortable with a backrest, so you may screw another seven 2x17-inch slats to the poles forming the back legs of the stool. These slats must be screwed from the bar seat level all the way to the top of the 46-inch poles. Most bar stools also sport footrests, and you can make these by screwing two 17-inch boards to the front and back legs and two 15-inch boards on the sides about 12 inches from the bottom. To add to its longevity, paint a coat of varnish on all surfaces of your bar stool.

Bamboo furniture is simple, yet it holds a quiet elegance that makes it a great addition to your home bar. Furthermore, bamboo is an environmentally-friendly material that is an ideal alternative to other wood materials. As soon as you get your bamboo bar stools set up, you can start relaxing on them and spending some quality time with close friends, sipping a delicious tropical rum punch on a warm summer night. Indeed, nothing can relieve you of the stress of urban living the way nature does. And setting up a Tiki-inspired haven in your backyard is the best way to bring nature right into your home.
