subject: A Programmer's List On Ways To Better Use Your Mac Computer [print this page]

Apple's line of computers is head and shoulders above the rest of the competition. The PC commercials try to argue that Macs are so much more expensive, but guess what? There is a reason that this is the case!

Here are some easy to follow steps for your Mac that will help make your life much easier.

In general, you should not keep your battery charger plugged in at all times. Rechargeable batteries have a set life of recharging and they are made to be drained of life prior to being recharged. If you always keep your Mac charger plugged in, you will end up cutting your battery life short.

If you are not familiar with the hot corners functionality of a Mac, then you are missing out. You have the ability to customize different corners of your touch pad, which will help make your life much easier. The "Application Windows" is one of the most useful features, which allows you to view all different windows of the same application at once. No more minimizing every window to find what you are looking for.

If you own an iPod, iPhone or iPad, you will be glad to know that a Mac computer doubles as a charger! In fact, I cannot recall the last time I plugged my iPhone into an actual charger; I solely use a USB chord to attach and charge it with my computer. This is a great way to constantly keep my phone synced as well.

When it comes to memory usage, you can look into a program called Onyx, which acts as a disk defragmenter and is incredibly useful for freeing up memory on your Mac. It is a free download and helps to improve your computer's performance.

The sleeping feature makes closing your computer easy as a breeze. Simply scroll over the apple in the left hand corner and press sleep. Within 5 seconds, your computer is shut down and the battery life is suspended. This is much easier to do than constantly shut down and restart your Mac.

Finally, many people are worried about not being able to use their favorite Microsoft office products on a Mac. This is not true, however. For an additional price, you can purchase Microsoft office for Mac, which comes equipped with Powerpoint, Word, Entourage and Excel.
