subject: Buying Digital Camcorder [print this page]

It is a pretty good idea to do some research before even thinking of buying a camcorder, otherwise there is a chance that you might end up with a camcorder which is not the one you wanted. There are so many retailers selling so many different camcorders, and so much information put out by the manufacturers.

While using a camcorder, every one of us has experienced the problem of the battery running out. But this problem can be overcome by using lithium ion batteries instead of NiMH (Nickel-metal-hydride), they last longer and are easier to maintain.

As far as the microphone is concerned, it should be at the front of the camcorder. The reason is that if it is on the top of the camcorder, there are more chances of recording the sound of the person holding the camcorder instead of the event which is should be recorded.

Every camcorder consists of three major parts, the lens which allows light into the camera and adjusts the zoom and what is recorded, the imager which converts the light to create the electric signal, and the recorder which records that movie data and sound.

A lot of people suggest reading reviews first before heading to the store to see the cameras in person. However, there are a few disadvantages to this process. First of all, you'll probably be overwhelmed by the amount of reviews and information available on digital cameras in magazines and online. After finding a few potential camcorders, it's time to look at the reviews. The published reviews can be helpful once you've narrowed the field in person. You can look to the experts and other users to help guide your decision. Every camcorder will have at least one negative point.

The models you see in these sources may be light years ahead of what you actually need, and cost a lot more. Your personal opinion of the look of the camera and its operation is more important than what the technical reviews say. Pick the camcorder that meets your criteria and is within your budget. Generally, you'll want to get a camcorder that is the top of the line for what you can afford. This way your camcorder can meet your needs for a long time before you'll want to upgrade.
