subject: Samsung 8000 55 Inch 3d Led Tv Review [print this page]

There's plenty of LED TV's out there and I was fortunate enough to review the new Samsung 8000 55 inch 3D LED TV.

The first thing you'll notice about this tv is the size. It's a huge tv and certainly not something you'd want in a small room - I'm afraid it's a very large living room or office for this one. Of course, if you can fit a 55 inch tv in your living room then definitely consider a tv of this size, it'll certainly make an impact on your guests.

The tv itself is supported on an attractive four-legged chrome stand and stands at 83cm high. The front colour is brushed titanium with a finish that will really bring a modern edge to your living room.

The tv has a pretty good set of connections, with one component in, a DVI audio in, four HDMI ports, two USB ports, two SCART ports and an optical audio out, featuring Dolby Digital Plus for that authentic home cinema experience.

The next thing that hits you is the 3D. The Samsung offers an immersive viewing experience by moving away from the old two dimensional tv into the realms of 3D, providing fantastic picture quality via the 3D HyperReal engine at the full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080.

For me, the 3D was certainly one of the most convincing I've seen and easily rivaling the Sony Bravia KDL-52HX903 or LG 55LX9900. If I had one comment it would be that I did notice the occasional ghost between the two layers of images but this is natural for a 3D tv and wouldn't be noticeable with normal tv watching.

The tv also has a built in 3D converter, allowing you to convert your 2D movies into 3D. By in large it didn't really affect most of the movies I tried on it, but it was much more noticeable when playing racing games on my Xbox 360.

Of course the tv needs to perform in 2D too and thankfully it did just that, with great image quality, rich colors, sharp details and excellent black levels. My only con (if any) would be that I found people to be a little off in colour, but that was quickly solved by a little colour adjustment on the menu.

The tv comes with a built in Internet@TV platform, allowing you to keep up with your friends on Facebook and Twitter via your tv, as well as view and listen to video and music on demand through LoveFilm and iPlayer. I would have preferred a keyboard to make typing a easier, but it's refreshing to be able to keep up with friends via the tv and not need to boot up a pc.

Another feature is the built in freeview HD tuner, allowing you to enjoy hours of free HD tv. You can even plug your own USB or hard disk into it and use it as a personal video recorder, which was a feature I know I would get a lot of use out of.

The tv comes in at 2700 or $3150 which for me is quite steep, but a similar price to other 3D tv's on the market. The thing that really sets the Samsung apart is the feature set and for what you're getting, I think it's a great tv.
