subject: Balloon Sinuplasty- Treating Sinus In A Pain-free Manner [print this page]

Different types of sinus surgery tools keep hitting the medical arena every now and then. Doctors also keep focusing on developing new techniques for helping sinus patients. One of the latest techniques that have grabbed a lot of attention these days is balloon sinuplasty.

This technique is based on the use of balloons for handling sinus ostial dilation and has been approved by FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The success rate of this technique is quite high and hence it is being used worldwide by countless doctors for treating sinusitis patients. Baloon sinuplasty involves minimally invasive devices and tools. Hence this procedure can be carried out under general anesthesia as well.

This uncomplicated outpatient surgery contributes in improving numerous symptoms in people suffering from sinus. This technique has helped a number of people who were experiencing problems in their sinus cavity because of an abnormal bone growth. The treatment was introduced in 2006 in US and since then it has it has worked perfectly for countless sinusitis patients. Balloon sinuplasty doctors claim that after going for this surgery, the sinus opening of the patients becomes considerably wider. This expansion allows them to breathe normally once again.

The doctors make use of a guide wire catheter, which is further equipped with a small sized balloon. This set-up is introduced into the blockage through the patients nostrils. After proper positioning, the balloon is inflated just enough to open up the blocked path. As the air is filled in the balloon, it fractures the surrounding bones and moves them apart to remove the blockage. Once the desired results are achieved the balloon is deflated and then finally withdrawn from the passageway.

Though the technique is simple and non-invasive but still its better to get it done from a trained ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) surgeon. The sinus bones are extremely soft and only a trained surgeon knows the exact amount of balloon inflation that is required for opening up the passageway. The best part about this technique is that it does not involve any cutting or incision. And hence the patient gets saved from the sufferings such as pain, bruising and swelling.
