subject: Make Your Car A Safe Place To Be [print this page]

Many people don't intend on approaching dangerous situations when setting foot in a car. Accidents happen, sometimes in spite of careful and safe driving, but there are other hazards in cars that can hurt or even kill the driver and passengers.

Drivers are provided with a list of regulations and tips before getting on the road. These include:

Buckle up Everyone traveling in the car should have their safety belt securely and properly strapped on before starting the car.

Drive safely

Reduce the chance of an accident by taking control of your driving. Any activities that are illegal or can endanger the lives of other drivers should be avoided at all costs.

Be Aware of Everything on the Road

Refrain from multitasking while driving.

Safety Seats for Children

Properly secured safety seats and properly strapped in children help provide maximum security in a car.

Plan for the unexpected

A safety kit for the car should include a torch (with batteries checked regularly), all the tools needed to change a tire, reflective cones or triangles, jumper cables and a seat belt cutter. For small fires, a fire extinguisher may come in handy. A blanket, gloves and even extra clothing can help if the car breaks down in cold weather. Every car needs a first aid kit.

There are many rules of the road that can save lives whether they are well-known, or little hints or tips discovered along the way. Take the following advice on your next drive:

Secure all items

Expeditious stops and violent turns can endanger passengers if there are a mass amount of loose items present in a car. Many injuries in accidents result from objects flying around inside cars.

Leave window control to the driver

Power window usage by eight children in the United States in 2004, resulted in them being choked. This bizarre accident happens when the child is leaning out a window and inadvertently presses on the power window switch. Parental locks are provided on the majority of cars. Use it, it will save fingers and hands too.

Keys and kids leave the car when you do.

Children can, and do, lock themselves in or let themselves out of cars. Losing control of the car is a huge possibility if you leave kids alone with the keys in a car. If the keys are in the ignition, they can start the car, causing it to move forward or backward, bumping other cars or people. Many children become locked in the trunk when unsupervised by a parent in a car. Leaving the keys in the car invites would-be thieves too.

Monitor the heat in your car Hot weather does not keep people from leaving children and animals in cars. The heat in cars increase greatly and can threaten the lives of anyone in the car. Likewise, cars do not maintain heat well, so in colder climes, the temperature inside a car will drop rapidly, causing hypothermia.

Metal is the main element in every car. Taking responsibility behind the wheel and being aware of all surroundings helps provide a positive outcome when driving. Be prepared for every event when driving.
