subject: A Look Back Through The Years [print this page] I remember, back when i was a teenager, the importance of having the latest album or single from the coolest band at the time. Back in those days, singles were still released on CD instead of being downloads, and I well remember going into my local Woolworths and buying hits such as 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls and 'Father and Son' by Boyzone on single. However, one problem with continually spending my pocket money on CDs was that, apart from the lack of money, I didn't have anywhere to store them.
This problem was solved, however, when one year my parents bought me a CD cabinet for my bedroom for Christmas. I remember unwrapping it and wondering what on earth they had bought that was so big - I had hoped for a mobile phone, but that's a different story. I was grateful for the CD cabinet, however, as it meant I didn't have to have CDs scattered around my room anymore.
It was finished in Oak and matched my bedroom furniture to a T. At age 13, i didn't really worry about furniture matching, but I know my parents wanted it to match. Because it could hold over 300 discs, I immediately rang my friend to arrange a trip into town so I could fill it up as soon as possible. Over the next few months, I actually managed to fill the CD cabinet and had to eventually buy a second one.
Fast forwarding to the present day, i now own my own home and have not only my CD collection, but my partner's to fit in the house as well. I've been really grateful to those two cabinets, as they now hold all the CDs, as well as DVDs and videos which i didn't want to throw away when we moved. On top of that, they provide a good ledge for putting ornaments on, and still fit in with the other furniture in our house. my parents smile every time they come round and see both the cabinets in the lounge; as my Dad puts it, "who'd have thought they'd have lasted this long." Because they are made with such good quality and precision, it doesn't surprise me in the least.
Actually, the same friend who I used to go CD shopping with ten years ago came round to my house the night and admired the CD cabinets standing proud in the living room. She did have some herself, but they weren't very strong and had to be thrown away eventually. We both wondered if the same company still sold them, and sure enough, there they were on the website. She immediately logged on and bought herself a matching pair, although this time in mahogany as that matched her home furnishings better than Oak.
I'll keep my CD cabinets as long as they continue to hold my items without breaking - by the look of it, this will not be for a few years yet. Definitely worth their weight in gold!
