subject: Eliminate Writer's Block And Write A Book [print this page]

No matter how experienced you are as a writer, chances are you'll have to put up with writer's block at some point when writing your book. Actually, if you don't succumb to it, writer's block can help you to make your book even better.

I started my writing career as a novelist, and got stuck on books several times. It's common to hit "the wall" at around page 100, or in the third chapter. This is when your initial enthusiasm has worn off, and the end of your book seems far away.

Why does writer's block happen? Who knows? And really who cares? It's much more important to overcome it. Read on to find out how.

Start by writing your book's blurb. A blurb is the short description on the back of a paperback that encourages you to pick it up. Blurbs are no more than 50 to 60 words long, so they're quick to write. To get inspired check out blurbs of books that are a lot like the one you are doing.

Once your blurb is done, compile all the information you know about the subject of your book. (If it's fiction you're working on, briefly summarize the plot.) Do this quick, without stepping away from your computer.

Keep in mind, this process may take a while as all parts of your brain work together to get your book written. When your conscious mind takes a break, you will be pleased to find some deeper part inside you is continuing, follow up on your original ideas.

Are you having fun? If you're not, your lack of enthusiasm will come through in your words. Get in touch with your original enthusiasm for the book, and remember why you want to write a book. Visualize. See your book on bookstore shelves.

Next, start to market as you write your book. Every writer needs to market his book. A publisher will not do it for you -- you're responsible for the sales of your book. In fact, the publisher will want to know what your plans are for marketing the book before you're offered a contract.

Your final step is to get a mentor for your book. Writing and publishing a book is a long process. You need instruction, guidance and inspiration from someone who's done it, and who can guide you through it.

Follow these steps and your writer's block will be a thing of the past and your book will finally get written and published.
