Only properly inhabited for the last 150 years, Spanish gold-diggers were here much before then. The real reason for visiting Hualien isn't its prospecting past, but as the gateway to Taroko National Park and the famous and beautiful Taroko Gorge. Taroko Gorge is a long canyon -- 19km of winding cliffs -- all aligned beautifully for your viewing pleasure. Undoubtably the top tourist destination in Taiwan, Taroko Gorge was set aside as a national park in the 1930's -- when Japan still ruled the island.
From Taipei catch the easy, two hour train to Hualien. If you can, sit on the left side of the train to get clear views of the stunning coastline. Taiwan is not called the beautiful island for nothing! In Taroko Gorge itself, you'll see waterfalls, vegetation coming down the cliffs and the blue river running throughout. Hiking trails abound, meaning you can easily find your own secluded spot. There are also plenty of chances to see animals throughout the park, and maybe even encounter one of several species of boar.
Accommodation options in Hualien are rather varied, but there are no Taroko Gorge hotels! Hualien seldom fills up and there are good prices to be found within walking distance of the train station. Hostels are also available for people on a major budget.
There are 3 transport options between Hualien and the Park:
1. A chartered tour. There are many different companies offering tours, but none in English. Your guide will probably speak Mandarin.
2. If you have a driving permit, you can hire a scooter. The trip from Hualien to the Park is around twenty minutes.
3. Taxi as tour guide. Hualien taxi drivers will be happy to drive you to the Gorge. In fact, for around twenty US dollars you can probably find an English speaker to be your private Taroko Gorge tour guide for the day.
