subject: It Is Simple To Paint Fiberglass Entry Doors [print this page]

Fiberglass doors are popular with a lot of people because there are a lot of different advantages of having fiberglass over wooden doors. They do not crack, rot or even warp like wooden doors can. They also give a person and their home more insulation than traditional wooden doors. They also look like wood and you can paint them any color you want. Fiberglass entry doors painting as you will discover, is quite an easy task.

In order to be able to do this project you will need supplies to get it done. You will need some acetone or mineral spirits, some mild soap or detergent, no bigger than a four inch paintbrush, acrylic water based latex primer, acrylic water based exterior latex paint, some painters tape and a couple of sawhorses and a screwdriver to help remove the door from the hinges.

Remove the door from the hinges and place it on the two sawhorses. You do not really have to do this but you will discover it is a lot easier to paint the door if you do remove it.

Never paint over anything that has not been cleaned. You can first take some warm water and a rag and wipe down the door. Then take a rag with either acetone or mineral spirits to give it a deep clean after that you need to let it dry before you do a final cleaning with some warm soapy water.

Now take off all the doors hardware including the weather stripping. Then take your painters tape and put it on anything you do not want to get paint on, such as glass panels for example.

Make sure to take off any hardware that is on the door and then put your painters tape or masking tape where you do not want any paint to get on.

The primer that you use to prime the door with should be somewhat lighter in color than the color of the paint, especially if it is a dark paint. Take your brush and with even strokes make sure to go with the grain of the door. After you have finished priming the door you will need to let it dry for at least 24 hours before you can apply your paint.

After the primer is dry you can start to paint the door. You will paint the door exactly in the same manner as you applied the primer to the door. It is important that you let the door dry at least for 24 hours.

Remove your tape after you are certain that the primer has dried and then replace all of the hardware that you took off the door earlier. If you door is not one that is prime access to your home, it might be advisable to allow the door to cure and harden completely you can do this by giving it closer to a week to dry.
