subject: London Hotels On The Cheapside That Don't Cost Wapping Sums [print this page]

London is often thought of as one of the worlds most costly cities, and theres no doubt that visitors can find it a little on the pricey side. However, theres a case for suggesting that this reputation is somewhat undeserved. With a little bit of savviness its possible to find some great bargains in London, and many of the citys highlights can be enjoyed for wallet-nourishingly small sums. A recent survey even suggested that a visit London offers better value for money than one to Caracas. Whilst its true that luxury West End London hotels can make quite a dent in your finances, there are plenty of affordable alternatives.

Cheap seats

If youre on a budget and have got a good head for heights, theres no need to miss out on the best of the capitals dance, theatre and opera. The National Theatre on the banks of the Thames is comprised of three different theatres, and presents an eclectic mix of world premieres and established classics. During the Travelex season, which runs throughout the summer, almost half the tickets for the Nationals new productions can be picked up for 10 and, if you dont mind standing, there are some tickets that can be bought for just 5. For opera lovers, tickets for the cheapest (and most vertiginous) seats at the English National Opera and Royal Opera House can be bought for as little as 10 and 12. 50 respectively.

Cheap eats

Trawling the shops and seeing the sights in London can work up quite an appetite. For those on a budget, its relatively easy to find good value and great food in London, although the prices at some of Londons more expensive restaurants can leave an acrid taste in the mouth. Looking for a quick bite to eat? Head to the Brick Lane Beigel Bake in the East End. Frequented by trendy hipsters and Jewish old timers, the Beigel Bake functions as both a community centre-cum-bakery produces over 7000 beigels a night. A bagel is 12p and filled bagels with delicious kosher fillings range up to about 1.50. Critically acclaimed and serving mouth-watering Indian food at implausibly low prices, Hot Stuff in Vauxhall is a BYO restaurant and local favourite . Fine dining neednt be the exclusive right of guests staying at the most expensive London hotels.

Freebies

London is superabundantly blessed when it comes to world-class museums, many of which offer free entry, making them perfect for both bargain hunters and culture vultures. Hop on the tube to Holborn and the British Museum, where visitors can marvel at the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone. Alternatively, take the clipper down the Thames to Greenwich and the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory. If youre interested in finding out about the latest cultural goings-on, pick up a copy of Time Out or ask at the reception of whichever one of the bargain London hotels you end up at.
