subject: The Best Sports Films Of The Past Ten Years [print this page]

If you like movies, then chances are you like sports movies. Sports films are incredibly fun to watch, as they are often based on true stories and provide a good balance of action, suspense, letdown and joy. While Hollywood churns out sequel after sequel, we rarely get a good sports film these days. That's not to say there haven't been some great ones, however.

Here is my list of what I consider to be the best sports films released over the past 10 years.

No list of sports films would be complete with at least one football movie. For me, that movie was Friday Night Lights. I don't know what it is about this film that made me empathize so much with the characters, but this is a truthful look at American high school football. The band Explosions In The Sky adds to this movie with an incredible soundtrack.

Another football movie that was unbelievable (literally) is The Blind Side. This is definitely a movie worth seeing, and coming from someone who read Michael Lewis' book of the same title, it does this incredible true story complete justice. Sandra Bullock also knocks it out of the park as the part of Leanne Tuohy.

What list of sports films from this past decade would be complete without mentioning The Wrestler. You can argue that professional wrestling is not a sport, but there is nothing fake or funny about the way the industry is portrayed in this film. This is an incredibly moving film and Mickey Rourke nails the part.

One of my top 30 films of all time is Million Dollar Baby. I will not give anything away, but this is Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank at their finest. It is no surprise Hillary Swank walked away with the Academy Award for Best Actress with this film.

One other amazing sports film from this past decade was Sugar. If you have not seen it and are a fan of baseball, you should. It gives a truthful look into the world of Dominican baseball and the struggles of extremely talented kids to make it to the pros.

As it stands, this is the list. Hopefully the next decade will bring some great sports films as well.
