subject: Rhinoplasty And The Different Ways To Do It [print this page]

Augmentation surgery of the nose is called rhinoplasty. The operation has two basic reasons, one of which is reconstruction, while the other is for cosmetic purposes. In reconstructive surgery, the person may need it to improve the function of his or her nose while in cosmetic, the reason is purely aesthetic.

Overall, the augmentation or reconstruction surgery may last up to a couple of hours. There are two ways of doing a basic nose job, namely the open and closed approaches.

Open

In the open approach, the surgeon basically makes a cut inside the individual's nostril and in the skin that separates the two nostrils called the columella. This gives the doctor a better view of what he or she is supposed to be doing thus making the operation easier and possibly faster with less risks of botching up the job. Many surgeons like this approach to rhinoplasty but there are also several risks that accompany it.

One of the risks of the open approach is the longer recovery time that the person is exposed to after the operation. Since there is an extra incision made in the area that divides the two nostrils this has to be accounted for when it comes to risk and complications.

Some discomfort can be expected after the operation since this is done on a mobile facial feature which is used often. The doctor in charge should be able to recommend which kind is suitable to meet the needs of the individual.

Closed

The closed approach indicates that the incision in the columella is not made. The cuts are only made inside the nostrils that the surgeon will choose as likely to give him or her, a better chance at making the most out of the procedure. This offers the doctor a limited view of the cartilages or bones that need to be augmented which is why many prefer the open method.

Recovery from the closed method is basically faster than the open one since there are fewer incisions to worry about and treat. For both methods of rhinoplasty, the swelling, around the middle of the face and may include the area around the eyes, usually goes down after a very short time and so does the discomfort and pain.

Bruising is also expected so ice packs will be recommended depending on how extensive the surgery was. The doctor will most likely prescribe some medication to ward off an infection as well as to ease pain and discomfort.
