subject: Face Lift: Know The Different Methods Used [print this page]

A face lift is a surgical procedure where the person's facial appearance is vastly improved. There are several methods in "lifting" the face.

Standard

This type of surgery, also called the lower facelift, deals with the jaw and neck area, which are usually the first to slacken with age. The mouth is also visibly improved which gives the person a taut and younger appearance in these areas.

It is not only the dermis that is pulled and trimmed but also the underlying tissues and muscles of the affected area are improved for a more natural taut look. The removal of fat in the jowl and neck may also be done along with this type of face lift to improve the person's appearance.

There are two basic methods in this area and these are called the S type and the SMAS. Both require incisions around the hairline or ear. The former makes a smaller cut compared to the latter, which equates to shorter recovery time. The S type is ideal for patients around the age of 30 to 50 years while the SMAS may be done at any age.

Mid Section

This face lift method focuses on the cheeks and lower eyelids of the patient. These areas may have sagging skin and wrinkles as the person ages, especial around the eyes. Cuts for this surgery may be made near the eye bags or the nose, depending on what the doctor is aiming to achieve for the patient. Improvements in the eye bags, the nasal area and the cheeks are to be expected.

Mini

This form of facial augmentation is less invasive than all the rest. The surgeon basically makes small cuts and inserts an endoscope which will help him remove problem areas. There is another type of approach which does not need an endoscope but is still included in this procedure.

Cuts are made in crucial areas in which the doctor feels to be where the removal of fats and tissues may be necessary. Recovery is fast and has fewer risks for this approach and the application of anesthesia is usually kept at a minimum.

Thread

This approach is relatively easy and cheaper than the others. It requires the insertion and use of special kinds of threads to hold muscle and tissues in place to create the desired look. This type of face lift is inexpensive and is ideal for individuals experiencing sagging in the face at an early age. For older person's this may not work so well since more threads may be required.
