Hans Christian Andersen was born on the 2nd of April, 1805, in Denmark, in the town of Odense. Hans and Christian are regular Danish names.

His stories and poetry have been converted in to more than 150 languages. The writings of Andersen have inspired motion pictures, plays, ballets and animated films.

For some unknown, enigmatic reason King Fredrick VI took a personal interest in him as a youth and paid for a part of his education.

Andersen was forced to support himself. He first worked as a weavers apprentice and later for a tailor. When he was 14 years of age, he moved to Copenhagen to seek service as an actor.

He possessed an brilliant soprano voice. Therefore he was accepted in to the Royal Danish theatre. But very quickly his voice changed. While he was still occupied in the theatre, a colleague told him that he considered Anderson as a poet. Taking this idea seriously, Andersen began to focus on writing.

Jonas Collin had a chance meeting with Anderson, and immediately felt a great affection for him and sent him to a grammar school in Slagelse. Collin bore all Andersons payments in school.

Andersons first story was The Ghost at Palnatokes grave. It was issued in 1822. Anderson also attended school at Elsinore until 1827. But he was not a extreme student. According to Anderson, the darkest and the bitterest days of his whole life were his school days.
