History Of Valentine Day

Valentines Day or Saint Valentines Day is a day celebrated every year on February 14 in the whole world. It is a day when lovers express their feelings to each other by giving gifts or cards or flowers. It is named after an Early Christian Martyrs who was named Valentine. In US it is the second largest card-sending holiday of the year because approximately one billion cards are sent worldwide on this day.

Many early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. On 14 February two out of them are honored, Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. The first one was a priest of Rome and the other was a bishop of Terni.

According to one legend, valentine actually sends the first valentine greeting to himself while he was in prison and fell in love with a young girl who was jailors daughter. Before his death he wrote her a letter and at last he wrote From your Valentine. This shows his appeal as a sympathetic and romantic. Valentine was one of the most popular saints in France and England. While some believe that Valentines Day is celebrated to memorize the anniversary of Valentines death. Other belief is that Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentines feast in February. So there are many stories which are considered to be the reason of celebrating this day.

In 19th century it was a fashion in England to celebrate this day. All over the world lovers exchange candies, cards, flowers and gifts on Valentines Day which is the only day when they can express their feelings for each other.
