Amsterdam for Artists and Designers

Because Amsterdammers have been given the gift of freedom in all angles, its no surprise that many of them turn into artists at one point of their lives. Its no wonder then that the design and art world in Amsterdam has flourished in recent years, from the urbane designs to the more functional industrial designs in Europe. Amsterdam is home to the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, which is attended by some of the most talented students from all over Europe all here to learn the techniques of architecture, graphic design, fashion design, jewelry design and textile design with specialized departments such as ceramics and photography. Unique stores in the area have also flourished along with the school and Amsterdammers love for art selling all types of functional accessories and furniture. Popular shops such as Bebob design in Prinsengracht, Moooi Gallery, Droog at Staalstraat, Mobilia Woonstudio, Pols Potten and the Frozen Fountain are all found in Amsterdam, giving designers a milieu for good lighting, interiors, different baubles and inspirational pieces to choose from.

Escaping for a day at the City of Alkmaar

Like Amsterdam, the city of Alkmaar has so many beautiful sights to behold worthy of a day trip away from the more populous Amsterdam. Alkmaar, considered as the cheese capital of Holland, has something to offer everyone aside from cheese but of course they have plenty of that too. There are different historical museums in the city such as the National Beer Museum, the City Museum of Alkmaar, the Holland Cheese Museum and even a Beatles Museum as John Lennons first guitar seems to have been made here. Among many attractions, the cheese market in Waagplein is by far the most popular of them all. The cheese market is open from April to September, during Fridays, when cheeses are weighed as a form of ceremony to be viewed by spectators. The buying isnt actually set in the market though although you can buy different kinds of specialized cheeses in the surrounding stalls after the ceremony. The city is one huge mall for shopping as different shops, boutiques, cafes quite unique from the typical Amsterdam gift shops are found here. After which, relax in their many open terraces and restaurants in the area.

Amsterdam and all its Museum Offerings

Because Dutch History was so rich and so well-preserved, its no wonder that there are so many museums to choose from while in Amsterdam. Choose from the different fields of art, science, history, architectural and local customs, depending on which ones you want to prioritize. For arts sake, theres the Rembrandthuis (House of Rembrandt) and the Van Gogh Museum, each offering an in-depth look at these artists and their works, and how it influenced Dutch culture in general. For those whod rather have a peek of Amsterdammers modern art, theres the Foam Photography Museum and the Netherlands Media Art, as well as Amsterdam Centre for Architecture for structural aspirants. Amsterdammers are also good keepers of Dutch history as the Dutch Resistance Museum which reincarnates the lives and battles of those who joined the Resistance in World War II and the Amsterdam Historical Museum is found here. For fashionistas out there, theres always the Museum of Bags and Purses which chronicles the different bags from the Middle Ages. There are so many educational excursions to choose from, and each one should help take you a step closer to understanding Dutch culture.

Joining in Amsterdams Love for Film

Amsterdammers love for film is quite evident in their lifestyle where many Amsterdammers continue to support independent movies and artists, and a trip to the cinema is a given every weekend. In fact, the love for film is so inculcated in their system that its no wonder that many major film festivals are held here such as the International Documentary Film Festival and Cinekid Festival. As said, theres a place in the heart of Amsterdammers for independent films, where many cinemas of historical significance such as Path Tuschinski, Het Ketelhuis, Pathe de Mune and Rialto Filmtheater showing local works all the time. They also have an impressive independent movie house ran by students, the Kriterion. Plus, theres the Film Museum in Vondelpark which shows many art films and classic movies all year round. The language barrier shouldnt be a problem since there are many cinemas offering Hollywood films although for a more in-depth experience, it is recommended that you sit through a local Dutch film to get a feel for their art. The love for movies is just so evident here that its easy to get intoxicated!
