subject: From Ancient Period To Modern World - India & Its Education System [print this page]

At present, in India, so much importance is given to education. In the ancient time also, there was much emphasis given to the education. Even in the mythological stories that are famous across the country, education is made as the central point of several stories, so that it gets highlighted and people do attract and get basic education. A child going to ashram (what school was called at that time) and get education there, from gurus (teachers were called gurus, at that time). When the child is getting the education from the gurus in the ashram, he has to live in the ashram only, till the time his education gets completed. The concept of hostels prevails in India since that time. We are also the world leaders in the terms of establishing of universities and providing formal education of medical, grammar, political science, economics and other subjects, in the face of Taxila and Nalanda University.

But the system of education gets deteriorated, as time moves from ancient to medieval period. There are various reasons that are responsible for the degradation of the most acknowledged and most ancient education system in the world. This is mainly due to the various invasions of the intruders from others countries in India. The kingdoms, at that time, are busy facing them and hence, they are not able to check the proper functioning of the educational system in their regions. During the British Rule, its their policy to not to let the Indians get educated. They only allowed a certain part of the society to get educated that too, up to the middle level. This education is enough to get them work as local clerks and can help them in running their local administrations. The higher educational bodies are meant only for the British people and no Indian could get the education.

The present education of India can be divided into various stages. The education is divided into primary, middle, secondary and higher levels. There are two types of educational bodies that are providing the educational services in India, private institutes and public institutes. The private educational bodies are providing better educational facilities than the public educational bodies. People prefer private institutes for education and are satisfied with the quality of education that they are providing. Government has done so many reforms to better the condition of the education in India. There are various Laws and Acts that are been made by the Government so that every single person in India can get education, without any disparity. A common national educational policy is implemented allover India, without any discrimination on the basis of region, religion, caste or sex. After so much of government concern, the literacy rate of India is still nearly 65%, which is low when compared to other developed countries. Hope that the literacy rate of India increases in the coming years
