subject: 3 Ways Your Point Of Sale Software Can Help You Increase Sales [print this page]

It's no secret that having well integrated point of sale software is a key to not only increase your sales, but also make your customers happy. You can train your sales staff in the latest techniques of closing a sale and there is no doubt that ongoing staff training can play a big part in the success of your business. But sometimes some simple point of sale questions can lift your sales to new heights, and you can use your software to help you do this.

Let's take a look at three things you can do to increase your overall sales.

Add-On Products. Once a customer has arrived at the terminal to complete a purchase, you can utilise the custom element of your software to prompt the sales staff to ask a few pertinent questions relating to the particular purchase. You can relate this from your own experiences when you recall how many times you have been asked by a McDonald's sales assistant would you like fries with that? The question is asked because McDonald's knows that this simple technique can increase sales phenomenally. The latest research shows that if they were to change their question to would you like large fries with that or just the medium-size will result in an even higher level of sales. The point is that the question must be asked, and by asking questions to generate interest in associated products at point of sale can be a very effective tool.

Product Lifelines. When a customer purchases a product that is likely to be consumed within a short timeframe, you have a great opportunity to make add-on sales by offering a discount for bulk orders. For example, say your customer is purchasing an item which is likely to be consumed within three or four weeks. The sales staff could be prompted to ask something like this would you like to take advantage of our discount offer where you can have three of this product for the price of two. A simple sales script like this at the point of sale could result in a doubling of sales for that product with little or no extra effort.

Customer Satisfaction. How many times have you arrived home with a product only to discover that you needed another vital add-on? For instance, I once purchased a set of flippers so I could try out my skills at body surfing. I chose a particularly unusual style of flipper mainly because I liked the design and I couldn't wait to get to the beach to try them out. When I got there I had great difficulty slipping onto my feet and spent several minutes pulling in twisting them until I finally got them on. I discovered later that I could have purchased a slip on gel to apply at the surface of the flipper which were made putting on quicker and easier. Naturally, I had to go back to the store to purchase this but I was quite annoyed and decided to make my purchase elsewhere. If I had been asked the question all given advice about the gel when I bought the flippers I would have been a much happier customer.

Who would have thought that using a simple set of sales scripts could make such a difference? Using your POS software in this way can have a dramatic impact on your bottom line.
