India is the third developing country in the world to host the common wealth. India will be hosting the games for the very first time, and it is only the second time for the Asia.
In terms of infrastructure, new stadiums are been made and the old ones are renovated for the commonwealth games 2010. Twenty six new stadiums are been made for the games. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which will have capacity of 75,000 spectators. Apart from the infrastructure there are some other areas in which we are working for improvement.
Delhi government is implementing many programs to teach English and other necessary skills to the workers, the cab drivers, waiters and other service staff for serving the tourists. A curriculum is implemented to teach the low income group who will be in a regular touch with tourists, these programs are too held at the tourist destinations like Agra, Mathura and Gwalior.
Government is also working to end the chronic power cut in Delhi, for this new power plants are been constructed and more electricity is directed towards the capital. In addition, athletes will be given free accommodation in the Commonwealth village.
A "beautification" project is carried out to make the city look good. A team of 500 people has been made who would "polish up" the city for games, these people are taken from Public Works Department (PWD). Their key task would be top clean and polish up the left outs by the contractors and the laborers, for example, the missing tile or broken footpath. This would make Delhi beautiful for the common wealth games
The estimated budget for the Commonwealth Games 2010 is 1.6 billion US$ with an additional cost of roads, airports and other structure. Though the preparations are going in full swing but the citizens still doubt if the it is up to the mark. As per the president of Commonwealth Federation Mike Fennell the preparation for CWG are slow and way behind the schedule.
Nevertheless, Delhi"s chief minister Sheila Dikshit is herself visiting the sites to check that no details are left. She has instructed the final teams to give quality work, regular meetings are held to boost up their spirits. Most of the work is been done and the rest will be done by august. Hopefully year 2010 with see India stage one of the biggest event in its history.
