subject: Discover How Walking Can Bring Peace of Mind [print this page] The lifestyles that we have developed as we go along day to day begin to seem normal because events happen and we deal with them one by one. Everything flows together and becomes our life'. A problem that occurs, quite beneath our radar, is stress buildup. Some of us call it just being busy, multitasking becomes a sense of pride, and all of a sudden you get this feeling that nothing is worth the effort. You feel blue and it takes a conscious effort to carry on. This is the beginning of a major stress reaction.
Before this point is reached, consider going for a walk. Start out with a few minutes a day, 10 is a good number. If you are at work, leave the building for a break walk. Bring a friend, stroll around the block, or if you happen to be in a landscaped center, around the gardens. Just the act of walking and breathing in the fresh air will send you back to work refreshed and energized. Later on, take a 30 minute walk on your lunch hour for even more benefits.
When you go to the gym, add the treadmill to your routine at least 3 times a week for half an hour. At home, take the children with you, walk around the neighborhood. At the park, walk around the perimeter of the park as they play, even have them go with you, have a little race. (It's always a good idea to carry a cell phone with you.) This kind of walking always brings laughter and adds to the stress relief and peace of mind you will feel as the days go by.
A good brisk walk can release endorphins which aid in your goal of feeling happier in your life. Anyone can begin walking but check with your doctor before you do any serious walking, such as a walk-a-thon, because if you are competitive, this could add stress. Keeping your walks at a comfortable level will ensure you of a calmer attitude day by day.
