Taking a Road Trip down at Zaanse Schans
Taking a Road Trip down at Zaanse Schans

Just 20 minutes away from Amsterdam proper, Zaanse Schans is a great village to visit for those looking for a bygone era in Amsterdam and Dutch history. Here you find many charming trivialities that are telltale signs of the 17th century village that it was such as a cheese factory, a clog workshop and several working windmills, two of which allow visitors in, to provide a great picturesque view of their skyline. The cheese factory gives out several samples of their cheese for tourists to taste. To get to Zaanse Schans, one can take the train going to Koog Zaandjik which will take you to its town proper, after which Zaanse Schans is only 10 minutes away by foot, or one can bike going there. Zaanse Schans is best kept as a one day trip and not an overnighter since they only have one accommodation available, the Hotel Sans Pareil. After walking through the town, drop by the Museum Zaans to get some knowledge about how their local customs came to be.

Touring the Cheese Capital of Holland from Amsterdam

Like Amsterdam, the city of Alkmaar has so many beautiful sights to behold worthy of a day trip away from the more populous Amsterdam. Alkmaar, considered as the cheese capital of Holland, has something to offer everyone aside from cheese but of course they have plenty of that too. More than cheese, they also have many historical museums worth the visit such as the City Museum of Alkmaar, the National Beer Museum, a Beatles Museum since John Lennons first guitar was apparently made here, and of course, the Holland Cheese Museum. Among many attractions, the cheese market in Waagplein is by far the most popular of them all. The cheese market is open from April to September, during Fridays, when cheeses are weighed as a form of ceremony to be viewed by spectators. The buying isnt actually set in the market though although you can buy different kinds of specialized cheeses in the surrounding stalls after the ceremony. Aside from the cheese, Alkmaar also has many quaint stores, boutiques, restaurants and cafes that are a refreshing take from the more commercialized spots in Amsterdam proper. And after hanging out in their cafes, spend more time lazing the day away in their many huge terraces for some insightful people-watching.
