There is a bright new star in the sky of orthodontics. Invisalign transparent aligning trays are being used by more and more doctors on more and more patients every day. In fact, as of April 2008 some 730,000 patients have enjoyed getting their smiles adjusted by some 48,000 doctors.

The Beauty of Transparent Teeth Alignment

The single greatest feature of the Invisalign system is the fact that they are completely transparent and far more difficult to detect than any other type or system of straightening teeth. This makes them very popular with adults who would like to straighten their teeth but who don't like the look of traditional braces.

The Comfort Factor of Invisalign

Another great feature of Invisalign is their comfortable fit. They are not attached to the teeth with adhesives and the teeth are not moved around painfully with stressful forces placed on wires running from tooth to tooth.

The Invisalign brand aligners are removable for eating and drinking and brushing and flossing. This makes it convenient to eat or drink whatever one wants to. It also makes it possible to properly care for the teeth hygienically during treatment.

There are many side effects of traditional fixed braces that are avoided with the use of the Invisalign system. Fixed braces have been shown to cause the roots of most patients' teeth to shorten. Because typical braces cannot be removed for eating and cleaning and because accurate x-ray images of the teeth cannot be made while braces are affixed to teeth there are more incidences of tooth de-mineralization and decay than with the Invisalign system.

The Invisalign system requires patients to change to a new set of aligners every two or three weeks. Aligners place less stress and force on the teeth and therefore are much less painful than traditional fixed braces.

Fixed braces are adjusted about every six weeks and more stressful force is applied to the teeth at each adjustment than the force which is applied through the aligners at each tray change out. Another great feature of Invisalign is that they are less painful in adjustments and throughout the wearing cycle.

Timeline of Orthodontic Treatment

The time spent in treatment with the Invisalign system is somewhat less than the time of a traditional straightening treatment. Most fixed brace treatments take an average of 36 months, with a maximum of 96 months.

The Invisalign treatment is usually accomplished in 12 to 18 months. There are some other treatment systems that can accomplish the desire results sooner than the Invisalign system but they usually involve surgery or temporary implants installed in the patient's jaw bone to help speed the treatment time.

There are some disadvantages to the Invisalign system of smile enhancement. The cost of treatment can be higher, some patients are allergic to the material of the trays, teeth must be kept clean, etc.

All in all, though, the Invisalign system is helping more and more people smile more broadly every day!
