subject: The Best Scary Movies Of The Most Recent Ten Years [print this page]

When it comes to scary movies, there has been somewhat of a revival in Hollywood in recent years. Horror movies are cheap to make and tend to do well at the box office. Most of these films are not very good, however. But there have been some great ones in recent years.

Here are some of my favorite horror films in recent years.

While most of the Saw movies have been lackluster and the franchise has become a cash cow, the original Saw is definitely worth seeing. Aside from the fact that it is scary and cringe inducing, it has a great plot and twists that would surprise any movie fan.

Forget about the fact that it is a scary movie, The Ring is just an awesome film. The plot is captivating and a great movie to watch for anyone who wishes they liked horror films but have a hard time getting through it. It is scary but incredibly entertaining, and Naomi Watts gives a great performance.

A film that may not have gotten great reviews (as few horror movies do) but I still found very scary and had me thinking was "Quarantine." Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter plays the lead in this one and does a great job of making the viewer believe that she is terrified.

Of course, an instant classic horror movie was The Blair Witch Project. I remember seeing this film in theatres a few days before going on a camping trip, which was a big, big mistake. This movie was revolutionary for its first-person camera angle, and the whole thing was shot on a video camera.

The best horror movie that I have seen in recent memory is Drag Me To Hell. This is a great movie for someone who is not a fan of horror movies to see as well. It is over the top, funny, jump out scary and has a familiar face in Justin Long. It is good to know that Sam Raimi is no longer tied to the dwindling Spiderman franchise, because now he can get back to what he does best; make scary movies.

Finally, Sunshine, by Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle is another fantastic film. While it may not be a true horror film per se, its plot is scary and realistic and at the very least, it can be called suspenseful.
