subject: My New Career In Medical Transcribing [print this page]

I have been unemployed for over a year in this tough economy. I previously was an administrative assistant supporting forty research scientists. With the recent trend in technology administrative services are no longer in high demand. Most of the people I was supporting were capable of drafting their own emails and letters. No longer were typewriters or secretaries needed. With the first string of layoffs they let go of the majority of administrative assistants. With over a year of time off from work and extensive career analysis I decided I would like to find something where I could work from home. I got a license for home childcare. I dont think I have it in me to deal with the parents not arriving for pick up on time and having other kids in my house for more than eight hours. I also feel that I would be throwing away my secretarial knowledge and computer skills Ive acquired over the years.

Thats why I am leaning towards a career in medical transcribing. I would still be able to use my secretarial skills in a career thats in demand. From my job searching experience medical transcription is a career I can do from home. This would be a great benefit for me because I have young children. I would like the opportunity to be more available for my children then worrying about getting home in time to pick them up after a long commute. This would allow me to pick them up from school and take them to soccer practice and not rely on friends and family. Another advantage that Ive seen is the demand for medical transcriptionists. It seems there will be ample supply and demand to stay employed with the different medical care and services. With the amount of people alive that need medical treatment they would insure constant demand for transcribing. SN:0TG9Y2ESY

The biggest influence for me in looking towards medical transcription jobs is that I can work from home and make my own hours. I have a couple family friends that promote medical transcribing as a career from mothers with young children. They also seem to have the flexibility to be there for their families. I feel with my administrative back ground I have experience in taking dictation, proofing science journals and my typing speed this would be the right direction for me. My first goal would be to get certified as soon as possible and find employment. After that I would further my studies to a more specialized discipline. Since I have little to no experience in the medical transcription field I wouldnt be able to state which direction I would like to take my career. However, I do know that once certified I will continue my education because knowing more will help to receive better job opportunities. Eventually once my children have grown and Im no longer needed as much at home I would like to return to office work. Maybe Id even go into management for a group of medical transcribers. I hope after reading my essay you would consider me for a scholarship. Due to my layoff (like so many others) my availability of funds to support my education are tight and my credit has suffered. I would like to start as soon as possible and get a move on my new career.
