See Edinburgh Attractions on European Vacations

Your European vacations cannot go wrong with a visit to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland since the 15th century. It has two distinct areas, the Old Town with its medieval fortress and the New Town with its neoclassical look that has had a strong influence on European urban planning since the 18th century. The medieval Old Town stretches along a ridge from the Castle to the Palace of Holyrood. Here you will see houses of merchants and nobles during the 16th and 17th centuries, unique tenements, and early public buildings including St. Giles Cathedral and Canongate Tolbooth. The Georgian New Town, built between 1767 and 1890, is a collection of seven new towns to the north of the Old Town. Owing to the area's lush topography, the neoclassical buildings in New Town are often integrated with gorgeous gardens. In the Age of Enlightenment it was a major center of thought and learning, and today continues its cultural and political links with mainland Europe. Recognizing this unique and surprisingly harmonious blend of old and new, the UNESCO has named Edinburgh a World Heritage Site.

Immerse yourself in art by visiting the museums of Nice on your European vacations. Free exhibits are available at the Galerie Jean Renoir which features young local talent. The Muse Matisse of a favorite of the artists fans, as the quaint and peaceful 17th century villa houses a mind-boggling number of his paintings, drawings, engravings and personal effects. Cathdrale Saint Nicolas is perhaps the most striking example of Russian Orthodox architecture outside of Russia, while Chapelle de la Misricorde is possibly Frances finest example of Baroque religious architecture.

Explore Stockholm on European Vacations

Since over three quarters of a millennium ago, when Stockholm was born, there has been a settlement in Gamla Stan the Old City. Beginning way back 1252, pillaging raids proliferated the winding medieval alleys, the town squares, the old churches, and the Royal Palace. Today, the horses and donkeys with carriages have been replaced by dozens of bus tours carrying tourists from around the world. To see the sights at your own pace, stay away from the main streets and explore the quaint side streets on your European vacations. You'll see how Sweden has come along since the ancient times when you visit Stadshuset, the City Hall. Stockholm's most famous landmark, Stadshuset plays host to the annual Nobel Prize banquet visited by some of the world's most respected luminaries. Other must-see attractions in Stockholm include the 10,000-pipe organ, the inspiring Golden Hall where Swedish history is depicted by 18 million gold leaf pieces on wall mosaics, and the Council Chamber which looks like an open roof of a Viking longhouse.

European Vacations to Pious Rome

Your European vacations will not only be enjoyable but meaningful as well if you spend some time in Rome and see its beautiful churches. Five patriarchal basilicas can be found in the city, with each one ceremonially assigned to one of the patriarchs. The first church of the popes is San Giovanni in Laterano, designated to Pope St. John Lateran. It is Romes cathedral and was built in the Baroque style. Exquisite 5th century biblical mosaics, marble floors, spectacular ceilings and a bell tower are things you will see when you visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, for St. Mary Major, the Patriarch of Antioch. The Patriarch of Constantinople, St. Peter's Basilica, was assigned San Pietro in Vaticano in the Vatican City. It is the current church of the pope, and one of the largest and most important Catholic churches in the world. Inside the large interior, you can see a lot of marble, bronze, and gold artwork, not the least of which is Michelangelo's Pieta. San Paolo fuori le Mura, St. Paul Outside the Walls, the Patriarch of Alexandria, is Romes second largest and is said to be the Apostle Paul's burial site.
