Taking a One-Day tour at Zaanse Schans
Taking a One-Day tour at Zaanse Schans

Zaanse Schans is a town with an old world charm featuring many important sights in Dutch history and is quite an easy town to take a day trip in, being only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam proper. Here you find many charming trivialities that are telltale signs of the 17th century village that it was such as a cheese factory, a clog workshop and several working windmills, two of which allow visitors in, to provide a great picturesque view of their skyline. The cheese factory is a great place to go to as it gives out a quiet tour of how cheeses are made and even distributes samples for tourists. To get to Zaanse Schans, one can take the train going to Koog Zaandjik which will take you to its town proper, after which Zaanse Schans is only 10 minutes away by foot, or one can bike going there. Zaanse Schans is best kept as a one day trip and not an overnighter since they only have one accommodation available, the Hotel Sans Pareil. The Museum Zaans is another must-visit as it encapsulates the history of the whole village from its factories to its local customs.

The Different Architectural Flavors of Oostelijk Havengebied in Amsterdam

For those with an itching for great architecture, youll be surprised at the many offerings Amsterdam has in place in Oostelijk Havengebied. Also considered as the Eastern Docklands, there are many functional and impressive buildings found in Oostelijk. For one, Oostelijk is where many major cruise liners dock temporarily or start their tour, using Passengers Terminal Amsterdam, an all glass structure made to look like a wave, an impressive display of what designers can do given the freedom. Theres also Loods 6 which was once the departure hall of the Royal Dutch Steam Ship Company and is always worth the visit as there are many artists that collaborated on the project such as Horn and van den Steene to make this the historical structure it is today. Music Building on the IJ is another beautiful modern piece that is home to different concerts for almost any music genre with a caf and restaurant beside the water. But the most functional of all is the Pythonbug, a red bridge which looks like it is slithering on the waters of Amsterdam. Happy Browsing!

Exploring the Muiderslot Castle and Museum

Just 15 kilometers off Amsterdam, in the town of Muiden, the Muiderslot Castle (named so because Muiden means rivermouth, affirming the castles location) is set to explore its 132nd anniversary as a museum this coming 2010. Muiden means rivermouth and aptly gives a clue to the castles location and Muiderslot was in a good location indeed, it being used as an ammunitions depot during the Medieval Period and as residence to many prominent figures prior to that evident in its collection of medieval arms, painting and armories. Having survived a demolition attempt from the government on several occasions in the year 1954 before the local government unit stepped in and declared the castle as an impotant historical site in Amsterdam and the town of Muiden itself, the castle is now set to invite many tourists to take part in its affairs and history. The rooms from the kitchen down to the bedrooms have been fully restored properly to its original concept as when Count Floris V first built it. For those interested, the castle is just a short drive from Amsterdam or one can take a bus going to Muiden Proper and walk a few minutes going to the castle itself.

Where to go for an Educational Excursion in Amsterdam

Museums are one of the primary reasons people go to Amsterdam primarily because there are so many to choose from, each encapsulating a part of Amsterdams rich history. It actually depends on which ones you want to prioritize most, whether it is art, science, architecture, history or local culture. If youre an artist at heart, visiting the Van Gogh Museum and the Rembrandthuis should be the first stop as it allows artist types to reflect on the life of these two greats and how each one influenced the life of everyday Dutch culture. For modern art, theres the Foam Photography Museum and the Netherlands Media Art, as well as Amsterdam Centre for Architecture. The Dutch Resistance Museum which records all the efforts of the Resistance during the second World War, as well as their Historical Museum is located here too. For the more fashionable side to history, check out the Museum of Bags and Purses. There are still so many to choose from, always worth the visit to have a different taste of Amsterdam every time.
