subject: How Technology Makes It Easier To Fish [print this page]

It is a fact that downriggers are becoming one of the most sought after pieces of equipment on the fishing market. Ever since trolling for fish became commonplace; fishermen were hoping to find new ways to improve the existing methods.

Downriggers are becoming more and more advanced thanks in no small part to the efforts of companies like Cannon. It is amazing that now you can actually decide how far beneath the surface you want to set your lure.

Once upon a time it was a matter of throwing a weighted lure into the water and hoping for the best. Now, you can buy equipment that comes with a depth finder allowing you to discover the depth of water that contains the most fish.

Before, if you threw you line into the water and found that you caught nothing, all you could do is reel in your line, cast it in some other location and hope for better luck. Trolling for fish is a much more convenient way to fish because there is no sitting around waiting in a static boat with a line in your hand.

Instead, the boat is constantly moving and you can attach as many lures to the boat as you think you can handle. Then you can lower the downriggers to whatever depth you think a particular type of fish will be swimming at that day.

Cannon are renowned for producing quality equipment and their riggers are highly sought after. They have a host of complex types but their Magnum product is one of the best around and is simple by electric down rigging standards. It is extremely tough and durable meaning that you don't have to worry about it breaking during an encounter with a particularly large fish.

Electric downriggers have a major advantage over manual ones when it comes to retrieval rate. The Magnum for example has a retrieval rate of some 250 feet a minute which is exceptionally fast and could be the difference between landing a major sized fish and telling your friends about the one that got away.

Of course you still need to know certain things in order to take advantage of the advanced downriggers on the market. For example, knowledge of how fast and deep you wish to troll is essential because heavier weights are needed when you go deep and quick in order to compensate for any water drag.

If you're going down more than 60 feet, you will need to use a weight of some 20 pounds which most fisherman would consider to be a lot. With this is mind, any downrigger you buy must be extremely durable in order for it to be able to take the strain.

If you're serious about catching large amounts of fish then you need to invest in downriggers and electric ones if you are looking for the best results.

Although they may cost a pretty penny in the short term, the long term benefits will more than make up for any initial expenditure.
