subject: Motivating Employees Can Go A Long Way [print this page] One sign of a successful business includes a staff and workforce full of productive, motivated employees. Employees who are motivated typically go the extra mile for your company because they have more energy and are often much more productive than under-motivated employees. However, what are some simple tips to help motivate your workforce?
Don't be fooled into assuming that money is the cure to every problem. It may be true that employees respond well to being adequately compensated through benefits and salary but it doesn't necessarily always mean happy employees and it certain won't solve every work issue. Cash isn't the cure-all and isn't the only way to motivate people. Commission checks and annual bonuses are cashed and then easily forgotten. Make employees feel especially appreciated by doing the following:
Give attention and adequate recognition whenever it is deserved. For example, if an employee completes hard work or accomplishes something important, give them public recognition or a simple handshake. Make sure they are aware that you appreciate their effort. Managers don't do this enough because they often feel unrecognized and under appreciated. Break this cycle within your organization and start giving recognition whenever it is due.
Be ready to applaud. This is a form of recognition that employees love to receive regardless of the time or day. When you applaud someone for his achievements, you recognize his contributions to your company. How difficult can that be? Do this whenever possible - at meetings, company-sponsored social events, a luncheon, or in the office.
Another easy, very inexpensive way to show recognition is to give out small plaques or trophies to workers who make great accomplishments. This is called wooden applause and is usually known for methods such as the Employee of the Month honor. You can get more creative though and give out fun awards for silly things. You will see great results and increased productivity with just a little effort to recognize your employees.
