subject: When To Seek Help To Save A Bad Marriage [print this page]

All married couples face difficulties from time to time. The stresses of dealing with careers, children, housework and finances can strain any relationship. Additional pressures can result from job-loss, health problems, aging parents or problem children. Sometimes it can be hard to tell whether you are only facing temporary difficulties with your partner or whether it's time to get help to save a bad marriage. Ask yourself the following questions.

Do issues having to do with your relationship leave you feeling despondent, apprehensive or insecure? Do you find yourself feeling suspicious of your partner? Does your spouse seem jealous for no reason? Perhaps you could use some guidance on building trust.

Consider seeking support to rebuild your relationship if these statements are true. You feel that your spouse is involved in a lifestyle that doesn't include you. You feel more comfortable at home when your spouse isn't there. Your spouse doesn't consider your needs when making decisions.

If you agree with these statements, maybe you could do with some advice on how to bring back the romance in your marriage. It's been a long time since you felt a spark of physical attraction toward your partner. The only thing you seem to have in common anymore is your children or pets. You and your spouse seem like people who share a house, not people who share a life.

Perhaps you could do with some communication skills training. Ask yourself the following. When your partner talks to you do you often have the feeling that you've heard it all before? Do you argue over trivial matters and avoid discussions of big issues? Do you or your spouse ever call each other names, swear at each other or make insulting remarks?

There's no need to continue living with the anxiety we feel when faced with relationship problems. What seems like a bad marriage often results from routine behaviors that we can learn to change with a little guidance and advice from a trained expert.
