subject: Why Mini-goals Are Needed To Reap The Benefits Of Healthy Eating [print this page]

Every day, doctors tell patients it's time to make a lifestyle change or they may suffer from a serious health-related problem such as a heart attack, stroke, developing diabetes or several other life-threatening ailments. While it is hard to make healthy changes to your lifestyle, there are many benefits of healthy eating to be found. However, many people just look to the looming health problem for motivation to change, which can be a problem. If you are looking to create a healthier lifestyle for yourself, on a long-term basis, then you will need a way to stay motivated.

A great way to give yourself the motivation you need to reach a healthier life is to set goals. Setting goals can be applied to any area of your life, not just your health. A few examples of goals include paying off your mortgage, buying that sports car or going on a dream vacation. When we feel like we have something to work for, we continue to stay motivated. Therefore, setting goals is an essential part of life. This is especially true when one is trying to make a lifestyle change by making healthier food choices. You have to have a goal if you want the benefits of healthy eating!

Setting goals is important for future success. This is especially true if you want to reap the benefits of healthy eating! Of course many people set health-related goals such as losing 50 pounds or fitting back into a size 5 dress. These are good goals, but it is easy to lose interest in the everyday work needed to achieve these goals because the desired results take time. Therefore, it is necessary to set mini-goals to keep you motivated.

When you set mini-goals that are directly tied to your decision to eat healthier, you will give yourself a reason to continue to make healthy food choices. If your goal is to lose 50 pounds in the next year, break that down into 10 mini-goals of five pound each. It's less daunting to think about losing five pounds than it is 50. Now, the key to achieving your mini-goals revolves around the reward!

You must give yourself a reward each and every time a small goal is reached! These rewards need to be something you have a great desire for - something you will be willing to work hard for! And, it's important that you decide on your reward before you start working toward another small goal. There are many benefits of healthy eating waiting to be discovered, but you won't reach them if you have no motivation to achieve your small goals. When one is trying to make healthier food choices a good reward for reaching a mini-goal is to delight in eating something unhealthy such as a peanut-butter fudge brownie sundae. That is a great reward! If you want to achieve your goals and a healthier lifestyle, it's crucial that you set smaller goals on your way to achieving your big goal.
