Learning About Acid Reflux Causes so You Can Manage the Problem

Acid reflux, as far as most diseases and disorders go, is fairly minor. With some minor lifestyle changes it is almost always easy to control. If you suffer from acid reflux, with proper care you can forget that you have it. An attack can be scary when you do go through one, though. If you know what the major causes of acid reflux are it may help lessen that fear. You can avoid most attacks just by knowing the major causes. Some causes are beyond your control but for the most part it is fairly simply to keep this disorder under control. Let's go over some of the major causes of acid reflux and how you can control them.

Do you often find yourself eating late night snacks right before going to bed? There is a reason you've been taught not to do that. Most doctors and nutritionists will tell you that eating snacks right before bed is not healthy. In all likelihood, you first heard this when you were a young child. This is one piece of wisdom that is based on fact! Eating right before sleeping, you have an increased chance of suffering from acid reflux.

This is because when you are lying down your body has a harder time keeping your stomach acid in your stomach. Make sure you allow your food to settle in your stomach before going to sleep. You will sleep better and wake up feeling better. Don't skip meals. Our schedules are often over flowing and overwhelming. When this is your schedule you may find yourself forgetitng to eat. We could also simply decide that we do not have time to stop and eat. This is sometimes what causes a bout of heartburn. When you don't eat regularly, the acid in your stomach starts to build up. This build up can start eating away at the stomach lining causing your stomach to send the acid into the esophagus and throat. The cause of heartburn is very much so avoidable.

In many cases, smoking is the main cause of acid reflux. This is due to several factors. Your mucous membranes are harmed by smoking. You have reflexes in your throat muscles which are damaged by smoking. It causes your stomach to produce more acid. It can also cause you to salivate less. One thing saliva does is help to reduce the problems caused by any acid that rises into your mouth or throat. For anyone whose acid reflux is the result of smoking, the cure is simple. If you want to get rid of your problem, just stop smoking. Naturally, for some people this is quite challenging. Remember, though, that if you quit smoking, there are many benefits aside from getting over acid reflux. This can cure or prevent many other health problems, some even more serious than acid reflux! Most of the time acid reflux is very easy to avoid. Keeping stress at bay, eating the right food and making smart lifestyle choices are usually all that is needed to keep from experiencing heartburn. Consult your physician if you think you have any of the symptoms of acid reflux. With your doctor on your side you will be able to decide on the best course of treatment and lifestyle changes to help you avoid problems with heartburn.
