subject: Choosing A College: Selecting College Majors And Minors [print this page]

When choosing a college to enter, there are a lot of criteria to think about. Except college location, costs of tuition, opportunity to get grants and scholarships, students have to consider such important thing as choosing majors and minors they would like to study.

In many colleges students can choose both majors and minors. Curriculum of college consists of majors, but students have to choose the minors that are necessary requirements at any college. The number of minors depends on curriculum and college itself, and the choice depends upon a major of the college. The greatest part of colleges in America is based on free choice of minors by the students. It means that the student can choose his/her minor himself/herself.

1. The main aim of minors is to develop skills received from studying majors and help students to become more independent and responsible for their choice. As it was mentioned, minors serve to enlarge and balance the main course of education. Students can choose their minors according to their personal needs and preferences, but it is preferable the minor to be connected with the major. For example, for those whose major is mathematics, such minors as philosophy or theater are inappropriate.

2. One more advantage of choosing minors at college is being involved in something new and interesting. It is very boring to study the subjects that are closely connected to each other as good expert and real professional should be an expert in every sphere. In this case, minors can become very helpful in developing the scope. For example, if you like theater, but it is not connected with your future career, such minor as acting skills can become a subject giving you only pleasure. Such minor as psychology can help you to develop some personal skills and help to deal easily with people and cope with different problems and stress that are inevitable while studying at college.
