The Minnesota Vikings were officially named in 1960 to show the large Scandinavian culture in this northern state. They have been quite a successful team being one of only five teams in the national league to win fifteen games in a regular season. They were also the first team to reach the Super Bowl four times despite losing them. There are presently 10 members of the Vikings that are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well. The Minnesota Twins MLB team first began as the Washington Senators in 1901 but eventually became the Twins in 1961. Their name represents the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and they began playing at Metropolitan Stadium. In 1981, the Metrodome was constructed for the Vikings and the Twins were set to play there as well. The team recently relocated to a state of the art outdoor stadium called, Target Field in December of 2009. In 1987 and 1991, the Minnesota Twins baseball team were World Series Champions.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are the NBA team that was formed in 1989 after the Minneapolis Lakers relocated to LA in 1960. The Timberwolves play in the Target Center and have had some issues with their coaches, finances and winning records over the years. All-star Kevin Garnett was one of their top performers to play for them from 1995-2007.
The NHL team called the Minnesota Wild was started in 2000 after Minneapolis lost their home team of the Minnesota North Stars to Dallas in 1993. They play at the Xcel Energy Center and have developed a large following from the start as Minnesotans have a great love for hockey and had been waiting for a professional team to be back in their city. The 2004-2005 season proved to be a sad one where the team went through the tragic death of their teammate Sergei Zholtok who passed away during a game of a heart condition. That year their season was cancelled due to a lock out as well.
