subject: What You Do After You Reach The Success You Sought After [print this page]

It may be that you started out with an idea for a new business or invention and with hard work it paid off. You should be feeling pretty good about your self right?

Then how come you feel anxious or somehow unworthy of the praise that is coming your way? Many successful people relate feeling this way when they had their first big success.

Success certainly involves a lot of behind the scenes hard work. Recognition of your success often appears to happen over night.

This can and does, create conflict for the successful person. This rapid transition from relative obscurity to fame often leaves the individual unprepared for the changes in their lives.

People may treat you differently or they may expect bigger and better things from you. You feel out of control and anxiety. This is a major impact on your self esteem.

There is a solution and it is not avoidance. Avoidance is another way to say denial and denial is a negative place to be.

How to deal with your success

Accept that your success does not mean you have to rush right out and prove you can do it again.

Anticipate others response to your success as a measure of their interpretation of what you have accomplished, not as a measure of your own sense of self worth.

Do not immediately give in to the impulse to avoid being open to new areas for success. Success in one area often leads to success in another.

Do a "system" check. This simply means allow your self to feel the positive as well as the negative feelings your success has brought.

Do not sabotage your self. If you are feeling stress or anxiety with your success it is all too easy to begin to flounder, to begin to fail. In doing this you are not empowering your self, rather you are allowing negative emotions to control you.

Unfortunately, many successful people surround themselves with negative people. They may end up broke and wonder why.

It is essential to your self esteem to have a support system that is grounded and includes positive people who enhance your self esteem. If you do not have such an emotional support system then job number one is to establish at least one other that is positive and whom you can trust.

Finally becoming successful is a wonderful experience that can, if you are prepared, uplift you. From a place of high self esteem you can go on to accomplish even more.

In this case we can refer to the proverbial dog that caught the car...turns out for the dog it was not such a great experience after all! Of course you are not the dog and in this case, "catching" success is but a part of your journey.

In all journeys, being prepared for all contingencies is of the utmost importance.
