Career planning is divided into four directions:

Concept of "career" is often identified with this type of career development, as in this case advancement most visible. Special cases of vertical career are linear career (the worker consistently takes place each step of hierarchy in structure of organization) and nonlinear (in this case at advancement upwards he/she passes some hierarchical positions).
Besides, there are other types of career determined by key changes in career:
Imperious career implies expansion of sphere of influence and can be connected with increase in informal powers (for example, it is possible to carry appointment of the main analyst to a position of the adviser of the chairman of board to such type of career development on financial questions, etc.).
Monetary career reflects payment or increase of income, it is not obligatory connected with position change.
