subject: The Color Yellow And Its Warmth In Fine Art Paintings [print this page]

Van Gogh and other famous artists held a special place in their hearts for the color yellow. To get that vibrant happy feeling use yellow, it is a very warm color. Yellow is a primary color with violet as its complementary color. This means the two colors go extremely well together. Yellow is a beautiful color and seen in nature in the sun and wonderful cherry flowers. A hint of yellow in a room will help to bring it brightness, happiness and warmth. Your paintings work the same way.

Feelings are made by the color yellow:

There is a spiritual and psychological meaning each viewer assigns to different colors. Yellow is one of the warm colors that create the same feelings as being in sunlight. Yellow touches the soul with happiness and enjoyment. There is no other spiritual color that brings more joy than yellow according to the scripture, it is mentioned many times. Directly connected to sunlight, yellow is warm and calms most everyone when they come into contact with it. Gold is also yellow and great wealth comes to mind when some think of it. Both men and women enjoy yellow:

The color yellow is liked and used by both genders even though in the past color only belonged to specific genders. If you are having a child and do not know the gender, painting the nursery in a pale yellow will be a perfect environment for either a boy or a girl. Yellow clothing is not particularly popular among women because it wont look good on many skin tones but yellow does help bring out a painting.

What creates the color yellow in paint?

Yellows were created from the natural colors found in the earth and from ochre. The paints of today use Cobalt, Potassium, Cadmium and other components like Copper complexes. Cadmium not only comes in light yellow but also comes in yellow. Lots of paints are available in oils especially yellows like, Hansa Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Azo Yellow Yellow Ochre and Naples Yellow just to name a few. Making a yellow mixture:

It is always better to start mixing colors from light then gradually get darker. Darkening a color is easier than making a color lighter. Secondary and triad colors are made with the use of yellow because it is a primary color. No matter what color it is mixed with it will lend an element of warmth.

To get a gold color all you have to do is use a small dot of brown. To get a fruit color just add a dot of grey to yellow it will make a great green and add a dot or red to make a wonderful orange color. The key to mixing paints is to do tiny changes and bring the color to where you wish it to be gradually. Paint will become a lighter shade when it is an oil drying paint.
