World Heritage Sites are special places designated by UNESCO, or the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization that hold outstanding value to the history of our humanity. Australia holds many of these unique sites.

Let's first consider the Great Barrier Reef. This location is a series of multiple reefs and covers approximately 133,000 square miles. It covers such a vast amount of area, and can actually be viewed from outer space. Honored as a World Heritage Site as well as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, it is home to over 1,500 species of fish, 30 species of whale and dolphin as well as six species of turtles.

The Gondwana Rainforests are another World Heritage Site of Australia. This is one of the rarest and most accurate glimpses into our Earth's primordial history. Back when Earth's land was compiled of only two giant landmasses, today's Australia was included in the southern portion, Gondwana. The rainforests located in Australia today contain the same species as back in the Gondwana of yesterday, giving scientists and visitors alike a window into our Earth's past.

Melbourne, Australia is home to the Royal Exhibition Building which has been designated as a World Heritage Site due to its historical contribution. Completed in 1880, the first Australian Parliament of 1901 was located here. A visit to this site gives the traveler an in-depth look into the history of Australia.

One of the most well known sites in Australia is the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This geographical formation is know as the Ayer's Rock and is a sandstone structures that achieves the height of 348 meters. The Aboriginal tribes of Australia consider this site to be very sacred making this site significant for natural as well as cultural reasons. Located in the desert, this site still provides a landscape of beautiful flowers, cactus and greenery and is known as one of the most beautiful places on earth.
