subject: Five Guys - A New Burger Experience In Fremont CA [print this page] If you are in California, you probably love In-N-Out hamburgers. Well, turns out that In-N-Out is focused heavily on the west coast. If you are in the east coast area you probably have other favorites. One of the chains with a great following is a oddly named burger place called Five guys. Five guys is hugely popular in the DC area (Virginia, Maryland ). Five guys has been unheard of in Calfiornia until quite recently.
When I first leant about Five guys coming to my neigborhood, I couldn't wait to check them out again. One for the first restaurants to open in the San Francisco bay area was in Fremont. I promised myself that I had to check out the Five Guys in Fremont
The restaurant is situated in a busy shopping mall off the Automall exit off 880..When I entered the restaurant, I was wondering about the stacks and piles of large bags (each about the size of a petfood bag) which seemed to be all over the place. But as my eyes got used, I realized that these were not really pet food plastic bags but were infact bags of raw peanuts. Next my eyes went over the people sitting at the tables.
Every table had a pile of empty peanut shells. Thats right. Wierdly enough, Five guys offers you an unlimited supply of peanuts (in the shell), which you can munch on while waiting around for your order.
The Menu: The five guys menu is pretty simple, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and French fries. You can order your burger and choose each ingredient that goes into it. There is no extra cost for the "toppings" as they call it. Toppings range from Mayonnaise Relish Onions Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes,, Grilled Onion,s Grilled Mushrooms, Catsup, Mustard, Jalapeno Peppers, Green Peppers, A-1 Sauce, Bar-B-Q Sauce and Hot Sauce - really a good variety to choose from.
While I was positioned myself in line to place my order, I observed the kitchen right behind the counter. It is an open kitchen - no glass walls and stuff. So you can appreciate how the burger you are about to enjoy is actually made.
I ordered a cheese burger with my favored topping - grilled mushrooms. And then I added tomatoes and a bit of the relish. I am not a lettuce fan, so I skipped that. I ordered a medium sized fries to go with it. I headed over to one of the large boxes and helped myself to a load of peanuts. While I was munching on them (delicious by the way).
When I went to pick up the order, I observed that the order was packaged very diferently. Every burger is wrapped in aluminum foil instead of a paper wrapper. And the fries were packaged differently too. Instead of a cardboard wrapper, the fries were actually placed within a paper cup! The fries were kind of dark brown. I wondered whether this was actually overdone. You know if you are used to the mild yellow fries from In-n-out or McDonalds.
About the burger: The burger was meaty and plumper compared to the kinds you get elsewhere. The cheese was melted just right. One bite into the hamburger and I could tell it was not like any other that I experienced before. The meat practically melts in your mouth, and the toppings just flood your mouth with flavor. It is probably the best burger I had in a while. The fries despite its looks was not overcooked. It really was deliciously different.
All in all I had a great experience at this Five guys and will certainly go there again! Learn about other fun restaurants in Fremont and surrounding areas at AboutFremont.com
