subject: Understanding What Stat Service Is [print this page]

Many companies who are courier companies are also medical delivery companies. These are two industries with a great deal of cross over. Therefore, you may easily find messenger services in Chicago who offer services which aren't going to apply to you unless you work within the medical industry in some way or another. A perfect example of this is STAT service, which is one of the most key sections of the medical delivery industry.

STAT is a term that is used in the medical industry in all its facets. Many times you will hear someone in a hospital or clinical setting request that something be completed "STAT" this means to complete the task as quickly as possible. This is a term that comes from a Latin word "statim". Many medical terms come from Latin roots, and in this case that original root word means "immediately".

The word means the same thing when it is applied to STAT courier service. Medical couriers, much like other courier companies, offer services in a variety of speeds. There are many scheduled medical delivery shipments which do things like move regular shipments of pharmaceuticals to hospitals and pharmacies, or who deliver tissue samples from clinics and offices to labs so that they can be tested. There are times though that a delivery needs to be made much faster than normal, and this is where STAT service comes in.

STAT service will make a delivery as fast as possible, and is reserved for situations which are critical. There are times when a life could actually hang in the balance based on the speed of a STAT delivery. STAT deliveries may be pharmaceuticals and tissue samples just like the scheduled service, but they also include more critical deliveries, like blood for transfusions, or even organs for transplants.

STAT deliveries are often made in ground vehicles, especially when the deliveries are only being made across the length of a city. Medical couriers will have special vehicles which are reserved to perform STAT service so that there are always vehicles available to perform at any time of day. Medical delivery companies will often also have access to helicopters for when the speed of ground delivery that they have access to is not going to be fast enough. Some medical couriers will have their own helicopters in their fleet, while others will have partnership agreements with separate helicopter courier companies.
