subject: Ace Athletes Backing Out From Commonwealth Games [print this page]

IN WHAT can be termed as a major blow to the Commonwealth Games 2010 being held in India, many ace athletes like Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt have backed out from the event as they want to concentrate on other events. Other such athlete who cited same reason to drop Commonwealth Games from their itenerary are Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Ennis.

Some of the sportsmen have said that security is their major cause of concern as Delhi is a much more vulnerable venue than compared with other cities where Commonwealth have been organised.

This year's Commonwealth Games is expected to be one of the most costliest affairs. Keeping all these factors in mind the government has arranged the involvement of extra security personnel including the Indian army and other specialised forces. The athletes withdrawing from the games does not only denote the undermining value of the games but it also affects the image of the country on the whole.

A common question looms in the heads of countless Indian's right before the Commonwealth Games, will it ever be ready? In one hand you have got a set of conflicted Indians who feel that there's yet too much to be done when the Games are less than a hundred days left. The expenses come springing up with unforeseen disasters taking place at the venue.

As of now, hundreds of million dollars have been spent on the games and the state government is contemplating to take out more from the funds meant for the poorest sections of population.
