With so much material it is hard to name just a few songs, so here is a list of the best John Darnielle songs as The Mountain Goats to listen to while painting on yourdisplay easel.Crows Its probably best not to try and read TOO much into this song, which details how the narrator is going back to his hometown in North Carolina and stops off to visit the graveyard where his great grandmother was buried. When he arrives there he finds the cemetery has been sold to build graduate student housing. He finds the cemetery in ruins, the headstones being knocked down and so he stands in front of a nameless hole in the ground, wondering if it might be his great grandmothers grave. As he does, a flock of crows fly out from the hole. Alpha Omega Darnielle wrote a number of songs in a cycle around a husband and wife known as the Alpha Couple. They go through a number of trials and tribulations and Alpha Omega is commonly known as the last song in the cycle, as the wife finally leaves the husband alone in their decrepit home in Tallahassee, Florida. The song tells of the simple waking moments of the husband as he makes boiled peanuts for breakfast and as he sits down to eat he finds the note from his wife on scented stationary detailing her leaving. Autoclave A love that cannot stand is the theme of Autoclave named after the medical device that sterilizes and destroys even the most hardy bacteria and cell life forms. The narrator likens his love as an autoclave, always destroying those it comes into contact with, unable to sustain life. He puts his attempts at communication in simple terms: When I try to open up to you I get completely lost / Houses swallowed by the earth, windows thick with frostAbout the Author:
