subject: Scaffold Safety Basic Checks [print this page] Scaffolding should always be left to companies which provide professional scaffolding services due to the dangerous elements of erecting and using scaffolding. You should ensure that you use a scaffolding company that is fully registered and that only uses a highly trained and experienced workforce. Look for companies that have been established for at least a few years so that you can check on previous work that they have carried out and perhaps even speak to past clients.
Once youve chosen the right scaffold company, you can leave the project in their capable hands. However, it may be helpful to be aware of the basic safety checks that any scaffolding company should carry out:
Check the condition of the ground where the scaffolding is due to be erected: foundations need to be sound.
Check the level of the scaffolding and ensure it is adequately supported on adjustable stands.
Securely fasten all sections of the scaffolding and check that any open sides to the scaffold have guard rails installed.
If the scaffold is higher than 3 metres, fall protection has to be provided unless there are handrails in place that are over 950mm high.
Ensure that the access to the scaffolding (usually a ladder) is secure.
Hard hats must always be worn when working on or near the scaffolding.
Clear the scaffolding of any tools or detritus on a daily basis to keep the walkways clear.
A trained and experienced individual should give the scaffolding a final inspection before use.
Do not use the scaffolding in bad weather such as high winds, heavy, driving rain or storms.
