The original flavor, traditional mullet is just a good old fashioned mullet. This consists of long, straight hair in the back, and a flat top in the front. You get this mullet by just growing your hair out while keeping the front trimmed with hair clippers. It looks best on lighter blond hair than on darker hair, but it works either way.
The Billy Ray
Before Billy Ray Cyrus, the mullet had been hijacked by the hair metal rockers, and while they did do their own thing with it, the fact was that it was harder for good ol' boys to rock it without being associated with Whitesnake and Poison. If you listened to Skynrd, the mullet was out... Until Billy Ray. You probably remember that Cyrus was always switching it up, but the main thing was to give the mullet a sort of shaggy look, and to adorn it with braids and beads and whatever else you felt like using.
Snake Plissken
Snake Plissken, of Escape From New York, had his own style of mullet, blurring the line between the traditional mullet and hippie hair. The main thing about this style was that it WAS shorter up front and on top, but only by a couple inches. This style represents that healthy, detached, and cool American cynicism. You support your country, but not necessarily your government, that sort of thing. This style works best if you can back it up, so you better hit the gym before you hit the barbershop.
