If you have your doubts about waterjet cutting services, we cant blame you. Honestly, it does sound like something of a loopy concept. Its not like you can saw a piece of wood in half with a garden hose, right? Not even with the pressure nozzle attached!

Think of it less like a water hose, then, and more like a hydraulic pump. When you take your car to the garage and they put it up in the air, thats done with hydraulic pumps. The same goes for those low riders you see downtown, bouncing off the ground with their front wheels. Its a similar concept, simply channeling the power of water to create a safer, more effective, and more efficient alternative to traditional power tool cutting.

A big part of what makes waterjet cutting safer is simply that theres no real blade. A drill bit can snap off and fly in any direction, as can the blade of a band saw. The worst thing that can happen to a blade of water, is that it will get everything wet.

This isnt to say that you can, say, run your hand under the blade and come out unscathed. Make no mistake, a waterjet is a high powered tool. Waterjet can cut through several inches of marble in a second, it can slice through glass and slate like a hot knife through lukewarm butter, so it shouldnt be handled lightly.

That said, it also provides a degree of precision that you cannot attain with traditional tools. Waterjet designs can be much, much more intricate, more precise than a drill, torch, or dremmel tool.

Waterjet wood designs are, sort of surprisingly, coming into vogue. You might expect people to stick to the woodshop when it comes to customized signs and doors, but, even with woodwork, waterjet still provides an advantage.

One of the most popular uses for waterjet cutting in construction and architecture these days is actually flooring designs. By using waterjetting, you can create unique tiles, mosaics, or floor inlays out of marble or slab.

That may or may not be necessary for a given project. You dont need an imposing, twelve foot wide medallion embedded into the floor of your cabin in the woods or your tool shed. Its probably a little too much for your average bathroom, as well. However, custom floor inlays can do wonders for creating a one hundred percent classy atmosphere in say, hotel lobbies, entryways, or even custom kitchens for the closet gourmet chef.

Basically, it comes down to space. In a small room, an exquisite floor looks pompous and tacky, like a chandelier hanging from the ceiling of a studio apartment. In a larger space, it looks elegant. Thats pretty much the rule of thumb.

Luckily, there are some capable waterjet companies here in Colorado. Its best to have floor medallions, mosaics, or whatever youre looking for created locally. For starters, it makes for a shorter production time, and you can work more closely with the company.
