subject: Children's Musical Performance Promotes Outstanding Performance in Other Areas [print this page]

Studies have shown that music has an amazing positive effect on children. Being exposed to music from a young age has led to higher brain development and better grades. Having a musical education has shown that students develop higher thinking skills, learn how to be a reliable member of society, and become more organized in areas like time management.

So many schools have cut music programs because of budget restrictions. That's why it is important to try and provide your child with a musical education outside of school. Anything from piano to violin to trumpet lessons to voice training can help your child excel in many areas of life.

The people of Great Falls, Montana, have taken all of this into consideration and developed a wonderful program through the Great Falls Youth Orchestra. Founded in 1997, this organization serves to cultivate interest in musical education and excellence. The creators and coaches in this program hope that participating in such an experience will promote a higher quality of life and a love of musical performance and creation.

The Great Falls Youth Orchestra holds auditions every September, December, and May. Each session ends with a professional orchestral performance, which the children prepare for with months of hard work and devotion. Any parent would be proud to see their child contribute to such an amazing performance. A sense of self-confidence and pride in the children is greatly supported by such a feat.

If you have a student who is interested in joining the Youth Orchestra, encourage them to speak with past and current members. They can give first hand information on how auditions work, the type of music, the progression of rehearsals, and what it's actually like to be on stage, performing with their peers in front of a large audience.

Auditions are extended to members of surrounding communities outside of Great Falls, as distant as Helena and Sunburst. Every child within a reasonable distance will be given a shot at this wonderful opportunity.

Besides providing children with the experience of performing together while furthering their musical skills, the Great Falls Symphony awards scholarships each spring to deserving students. These will go toward private lessons.

The Great Falls Symphony Fall Youth Orchestra will hold what promises to be an awe-inspiring performance at the Mansfield Theater on Sunday, November 21, 2010, at two in the afternoon. Tickets for the performance are ten dollars for general admission.
