subject: Getting All The Extras With Your Car Hire Reservation [print this page]

Car rental companies make money on the things they can sell you that are additional. In other words, the add-ons that you elect that may not be needed is more revenue for the car rental company and is one reason car rental agents are push their customers to choose the additional options and extra bells and whistles.

Items that car rental companies make their money on are not only extras like a child safety seat or vehicle upgrade but also on the extras like the extra car insurance and GPS navigation systems as well. Now while these may seem like helpful extras it is important to consider bringing your own extras as the cost of these items can quickly add up. Keeping in mind that these companies not only have a charge of about $20 per item for these bonus items, but also that times a 7 day rental that is an extra $140 for just that one little extra.

Additional things you may want to think about would include the fact that it is not the car rental companies that are liable for the functionality of these add-ons. Some people will go as far to say that when GPS systems stop working is directly related to the rental company, but this is extremely unlikely and it is probably more likely that the functionality of this add-on has nothing to do with them.

So if you want to make sure the item you need works correctly and save money at the same time you will want to make sure you bring whatever you have already with you. You may benefit, for example, if you bring that old, trustworthy, portable GPS device with you during your travels. Of course, while you are traveling you will need a card that will upload and download information internationally because these systems work like cell phones.

Errors can be thwarted when you use the system you already have because these GPS devices all work differently. For instance, a rented GPS system may send you looking for more answers and out of the way, which will end up causing more trouble as well as money for your rental car. Now, remembering the car rental company is not responsible for this, so you may want to choose to use the GPS device you already own.
