subject: In A Self Defense Situation, You Are In One Of These 3 Categories! [print this page] Are you really serious about learning to protect and defend yourself against a brutal attacker is bigger, stronger, and better armed than you? Do you want to be able to survive the chaos, violence, and rage that will be coming at you from another human being who doesn't care whether you live or die?
Do you? Really?
This article is about the reality of that moment - the moment when you find yourself face-to-face with your worst nightmare. It's about that moment when you are facing someone totally different than your training partner from your martial arts or self defense class - and you're in a situation that is worlds apart from what you're used to experiencing in that same class.
In a self defense situation - a real-world, brutal attack being launched by an assailant who doesn't care whether or not you're going to try to use self defense moves on him - there are three categories of victims. Each type of victim has certain character traits that put him or her in that category, regardless of whether they want to be there or not.
The 3 Categories of Victim/Targets are:
1. Blind, dumb, and ignorant - These are the people that walk around every day, either in denial of anything actually happening to them, or completely oblivious to what's going on around them. And, because they are "blind" to the reality that anything could happen to anyone, at any moment, they remain "dumb" and never bother to learn how to protect themselves. So, in their "moment-of-truth," they are "ignorant" and without a clue as to what to do. So, many of them simply curl up in a ball and go out screaming, pleading, and praying for anything other than what is happening to them.
2. Unprepared, and uncommitted - This group of victims may know about the reality and possibility that they may become a target of aggression at any time. But, this group is filled with those who either limit their so-called training and preparation to merely reading books, watching videos, or coming up with fantasy techniques in their minds. If they do train, they limit their training to the step-by-step techniques and sparring "games" that bolster confidence in your ability to perform the techniques themselves - but do nothing in the way of preparing you for the violence and rage inside a real attack.
So, when these victims find themselves face-to-face with their worst nightmare - with the rage, intention, and violent assaults from a bigger, stronger, more determined attacker - they find themselves to be just as "unprepared" as the victim who never learned anything. And, because they were "uncommitted" during their own training and preparation phase before the assault, they cannot see through the respectful, disciplined, and pre-programmed lessons for being a "good person" to commit to using the same kind of violence as the attacker.
3. Prepared & determined - This group of victims are only "victims" in the mind of the attacker. They may never have learned a single technique, tactic, or strategy for self defense, or participated in a single martial arts class. But, they know that there is danger in the world, and that it could touch them at any moment. They also recognize something at a very deep level that most other people do not.
They recognized that they - and they alone - are responsible for their own safety and self-protection in the moment that it's happening.
They also recognize their own value in the world, and the value that they have in the lives of their friends and loved-ones.
And, they recognize and understand that, whether they've ever been attacked before or not - that they must be "prepared" and "determined" to do three things. They must have the ability AND capability...
* 1) To act when action is necessary!
* 2) To withstand and respond in the face of all of the rage, chaos, and violence that their attacker will be throwing at them, and...
* 3) To use the very same kind of violence, commitment, and intention against their assailant!
Of course, this person could still become a victim and lose at the hands of his attacker. But, not because he gave up, wasn't ready, or didn't give it all they had!
