subject: Managing Employees- Tips On How To Come To Terms With The Deadbeat Employee [print this page]

One of the greatest secrets that all business owners must learn is how to manage their employees. After all, these employees are the backbone to your business and without them, your enterprise would not be. Maybe by now you are thinking that there are many people looking for a job and thus if one batch of employees leaves, you will simply get some more. This is a wrong attitude to carry into your business venture. Managing employees is not just having control over them, but offering them a favorable environment in which they can work to give you the best outcome. Employees should be able to carry out the business affairs as though they were doing it for themselves.

There are many types of employees that an employer has to deal with, bearing in mind that people are different and have different motivations to do what they do. One of the most common type of employee that an employer will have to know how to deal with is the deadbeat employee. This is the staff member who always seems to be rubbing the boss in the wrong way. They are ever late for meetings and when they show up, they rarely ever contribute to the discussions. If they are not late for the meeting they will be caught passing time away in the place of work, doing their own things or simply gossiping around the office while other staff members are busy doing their work.

The deadbeat employee hardly ever contributes to the growth of the company, but does just enough work to keep them employed. Employers find it hard to fire such an employee, but for no explained reason at all. How then, as the manager in such a work place, do you manage such an employee? To begin with, you need to understand why they behave the way they do. Reasons could range from challenges and hardships back at home, to lack of challenging roles or functions in the work place, and probably this is why the employee does just enough work to keep him employed. Instead of letting them get away with the bad habits, let them start ingraining good habits through your intervention.

Once you get to understand where the problem lies, you could incorporate the help of other employees by asking them to make the environment more favorable for the deadbeat person. For example, if the problem lies in family affairs gone sour, let the other co-workers provide an environment where the affected individual feels at home. Let him feel accepted and valued in the work place. Motivate by showing them that he can make it despite his circumstances. This will make them look forward to coming to work every morning and will even motivate him when he knows that he is surrounded by people who care. With time, this harmonious working relationship will work for all of your employees.
