subject: Resolving unhandled Exception In Excel.exe: C0000005: Access Violation. Ms Excel Error [print this page]

MS09. dll is a library file present in Microsoft Office that enables all the applications of Microsoft Office to function properly. In MS Excel, the Ms09.dll file plays an important role and it might sometimers cause MS Excel to crash when Excel calls an XLL function that takes an array. Owing to MS Excel crash, the workbook may get corrupt due to which the data becomes inaccessible. In order to access the data from the workbook, you require a valid and updated backup file. However, if the backup is not available or corrupt, then you need to use a good-quality excel repair software to retrieve your data from the corrupted Excel workbook.

For instance Sometimes, complex workbooks that require heavy recalculations cause MS Excel to accidentally attempt to free an invalid address for an array of doubles being passed as an argument to an XLL function call, that causes Ms09.dll to crash Excel and produce any of the following error message:

Unhandled exception in Excel.exe: C0000005: Access Violation.

Or

The instruction at "0x308C9EBB" referenced memory at "0xFFFF0000". The memory could not be "read".

This problem is common in MS Excel 2000.

Cause:

This is a rare condition that mainly occurs when Excel prepares to call an XLL function during a recalculation. In the whole scenario, Excel calculates all dependent cells required to generate the arguments to pass the XLL function. After the calculation, if any of the dependent values are modified by the outside code (such as DDE or Automation), Excel must postpone the XLL call and recalculate the dependent cells again. And if the dependent values are being passed as an array, then Excel may unexpectedly prompt to free an invalid memory block based on the contents of the array value preceding the entry which is not calculated. This may cause MS Excel to crash.

Resolution:

To resolve this problem, Microsoft suggests to use a supported hotfix for the systems that are experiencing this problem. However, if the hotfix solution fails to resolve the issue and MS Excel crashes then it may cause the workbook to get corrupt. In most cases, a corrupt Workbook does not open. Consequently, the data stored in the workbook may not be accessed.

In such situations, you can fix the issue using an effective excel repair application to repair the corrupt Excel workbook. Once the workbook gets repaired, you can successfully access your data saved in the workbook. These applications repair excel file via innovative scanning algorithms. Also, these tools restore the Excel file without any alterations in the original content.
